The art of layering texture

There is a moment, near the end of every project, when a house stops being a set of decisions and starts being a home. It usually happens on install day, somewhere between the rug going down and the last book finding its shelf.

We are often asked how to make a new room feel old — collected, lived-in, unforced. The honest answer is restraint: fewer, better things, given room to breathe, and a willingness to leave a little emptiness where the eye can rest.

Materials do the quiet work. Lime plaster softens the light, unlacquered brass darkens with touch, white oak warms underfoot. Choose surfaces that improve with age and the room will keep getting better long after we've gone.
